Small state. Plenty of good water.

How New Jersey trout stocking works

Read the water name, date, and status together

Find a water you know, then open its stocking records. A long river may have several entries for different stretches. Match the section name before comparing dates.

A scheduled release is a plan. A completed stocking needs a reported release date. Our archive keeps the original year on older schedules, so a 2025 row remains a 2025 plan even when you open it today.

Use the page for the season you’re planning

NJDEP publishes separate spring and fall information. Start with the relevant seasonal page and read its notices before finding your water in the schedule.

For 2026, the state moved fish previously raised for winter stocking into the October fall program. An older winter article may describe a calendar that no longer applies.

Choose an entrance and a second option

Once you have a water in mind, find a legal public entrance. A lake’s center point or a stream midpoint helps you locate the water on a map; it rarely makes a useful destination for driving directions.

Save one alternative nearby. If the first bank is crowded or the route is closed, you can spend the morning fishing instead of starting the search again.
